Passive Paper Toilet Training Technique

For many dog owners, one method to train them in relation to their elimination habits, is to use the paper technique, or passive technique.

This method involves the use of a confined area in the house, like a small room, or laundry area, or similar.

The Method and Preparation

Firstly, ensure that every part of the floor is covered with absorbent paper towels, and this way, no matter where your puppy does his business, it will be on the paper.

Over time, like a few weeks, you will notice that your puppy has a more or less general spot that he likes to use.

After a while, you may start to slowly reduce the area you cover with paper towels, and as long as you do not reduce the area too quickly, should notice that your dog tends to remain doing his business on the paper.

In the event that he starts messing elsewhere, back up a little, and place more paper on the floor, and reduce slowly.

Once this process has been safely established, the idea is to slowly move the ‘reduced’ paper pile from the original spot to a location just outside the house, or other area of your preferred place.

The main key here is to ensure that you slowly change the position, with no more than a few centimetres or inches over a week’s time.

Dogs learn by repetition, and slow adjustments over time will 'stick' better.
